Our Farms

A Closer Connection, Better Food

Homestead Meats works with a small group of  family-owned, sustainable farms in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin that raise their livestock on pastured land, without commercial feed, hormones, or GMOs.  We know these farmers personally and visit their farms whenever we can.

Kilgus Farmstead

FAIRBURY, ILLINOIS

What began as a dairy farm in the 1950s has grown into a multigenerational family operation producing milk, beef, pork and goat. The Kilgus family raises Jersey dairy cows on seasonal pasture and grows non-GMO feed for its livestock. During our most recent visit, Justin Kilgus showed us how the family has combined generations of farming experience with new ideas to keep the business independent and thriving.

Slagel Family Farm

FAIRBURY, ILLINOIS

The Slagel family has been farming in central Illinois since 1888. Today, the fifth-generation operation raises livestock, grows much of its own feed and processes meat in its own facility. We've worked with Slagel for more than a decade, and its reputation among Chicago's leading chefs is well deserved. Check out their video to learn more about the care and attention that go into producing their exceptional meats.

Gunthorp Farms

Pinn-Oak Farms

LA GRANGE, INDIANA

The Gunthorp family has raised pigs on pasture for generations. When economic pressures threatened the family business, Greg Gunthorp found a different path by selling directly to chefs and restaurants, beginning with Chicago's legendary Charlie Trotter. Today, the family continues to raise livestock using traditional pasture-based practices, another example of an independent farm finding success without abandoning its principles.

DELAVAN, WISCONSIN

Pinn-Oak Farms is a family-owned business specializing in lamb and goat. In addition to supplying meat, it operates its own butcher shop and provides custom processing services, including certified halal options. Its focus on these less commonly available meats and specialized butchery makes Pinn-Oak a valuable part of our network of independent Midwestern producers.

Other Farms We Work With

From time to time, we source from other small Midwestern farms, particularly for seasonal offerings and special projects. Those relationships may change from year to year as we find interesting products and opportunities to work with farms whose practices align with ours.
